The story of the early beginnings of the Our Lady of Calvary Grotto near Asueyi in the Techiman North District is as fascinating as the captivating grandeur of the features of nature one finds on the grounds itself. According to Fr. Otmar Auinger, the “history goes back to the time, when the diocese of Kumasi acquired the land near Asueyi.” The Grotto land belongs to the people of Jama. The place was used for traditional worship rituals by the people of Jama.
Recounting his version of the history of the Grotto, Nana Anthony Manu, ex-Church President of Asueyi, remembers that,
“The idea of a Grotto was initiated by Op. Matthew Kwadwo Okrah, the then Catholic Church president of Aseuyi. This came about after participating in the annual diocesan pilgrimage at Buoho (Ashanti Region) under Bishop Bronk around 1966. Op. Matthew Okrah then informed Rev. Fr. Huismann, SMA, who inspected the place and became interested. He, in turn, informed Bishop Bronk.
Around 1970, Fr. Huismann with Op. Matthew Okrah and other church elders from Aseuyi, consulted the Jama Traditional Council if he could have access to the land for Christian activities. They were ready to give out the land on condition that the priest assists in the building of a palace for Jama. The priest did assist in constructing the Jama palace at that time.
